James Collins - Portrait Artist

Website: www.jamescollins.org

Based in the heart of the Scottish Highlands, where you can commission a unique, sensitive and accurate portrait in pencil, watercolour or gouache.

Working from photos, which will be returned in good condition, I can create a startling likeness of children or pets, houses, boats - even a favourite landscape or harbour scene.

I don't think a painting should ever be confused with a photo - they are really quite different. A good painting (or drawing) ought to bring out the inner character of the subject. It should be more robust, and the tone and colour should be more subtle and vigorous than any photo.

There was a great 19th century Japanese artist called Hokusai ( you might have seen his painting of waves). When he reached the age of eighty he said, "At last I do not know how to draw!". He meant that he no longer had to think about the process of drawing - he just did it. I'm not sure I'll ever reach that stage, but I feel lucky that I am able to earn a living doing the thing I love - painting and drawing.

I hope you enjoy viewing the pictures on my site, and if you feel you would like to commission a pencil drawing or a painting to celebrate your pet, someone in your life, or a local landscape - please contact me on 01309 641556, mobile 07766-837093 (UK), and we can discuss your idea. I will need at least one good, clear photo to work from - several would be better still.
