Sam & The Mice
Sam was my mother's cat. At that time I was a biology teacher, and I was keen to photograph a cat's teeth to show my students the kind of teeth needed by a flesh eater, but Sam would not cooperate by opening his mouth when I had my camera ready.
Then one school holiday I brought home an aquarium tank converted to a home for mice. I bred mice at school in connection with lessons on genetics., and had an idea! I took the tank, complete with mice and a secure lid, put it on the floor in my mother's house when Sam was at home. Sam walked round and round the tank, watched the mice, tried to reach them, and eventually lay down and kept watch...
Then he yawned, and yawned a second time before stalking off.
The next day I set up a camera on a tripod and put the tank in position again. Sam went through the same routine, and when he yawned, I took this photo.
I never thought of an idea to get a rabbit to open its mouth for a photo of herbivorous dentition.
